German Notebook Requirements

            You are required to keep a 3-ring binder for German class.  You should keep your notebook neat and organized at all times.  I will hole-punch all worksheets and handouts for you.  These should be filed as soon as you get them.

I will do random and announced notebook checks throughout the semester.  Since every paper you receive from me will be hole-punched, I expect everything to be filed correctly when I check notebooks.  There shouldn’t be any graded papers or handouts in the front or back pockets of the notebook.

The following areas are to be separated with tabbed and labeled dividers:

1.   Notes:  Keep all written notes here.  From time to time I will hand out typed notes.  These should also be kept here.  We also learn songs throughout the semester.  You should write them down or keep the printed copies here.

2.   Verb Sheet:  You will receive a verb sheet at the beginning of the semester.  You are to conjugate all chapter verbs when they are assigned.  This is an invaluable tool for sentence writing and should be properly maintained.  It will be collected and graded periodically.

3.   Vocabulary:  We have vocabulary quizzes every Thursday.  You need to write down every list in this section.  You should also file graded vocabulary quizzes in this section.  A ‘Word of the Day’ will be listed on the board and should be written on a separate sheet of notebook paper in this section.

4.   Sentences of the Week:  We have sentences of the week quizzes every Friday.  You need to write down every sentence in this section.  You should also file graded quizzes in this section.  There will be a test at the end of the semester over every sentence we have had.  It is to your benefit to write them down in German and what they mean in English.

5.   Graded Work:  All graded assignments (warm-up, homework, classwork) other than vocabulary quizzes and sentences of the week should be kept in this section.  It should be neat and assignments should be in a logical order (first assignment to most recent assignment).  It is to your benefit to keep a table of contents so you can keep track of your grade.

Important Information

Tests/Quizzes

     Vocabulary Quizzes:  You will have 3 vocabulary quizzes for every chapter.  You will need to learn both the spelling of the word in German and the English translation.  You will receive the new list after each quiz.  A schedule of all vocabulary quizzes will be given to you at the beginning of the semester.

     Chapter Test:  Chapter Tests will take place every 10-11 days.  A schedule will be given to you at the beginning of the semester.

     Sentences of the Week:  You will be tested on 2-4 phrases every Friday.  You will have to memorize the phrases in German and be able to translate them into English.  You will receive the new phrases on Monday.

     Oral Exams:  Generally you will have 2-3 oral exams during the semester.  You will be given notice and preparation ahead of time.  Oral Exams count as quiz grades unless you are told otherwise.

     Other:  At any time you can be given additional tests or quizzes, sometimes without warning.

Extra Credit

     Volunteering:  During some whole-class activities, you will be given the opportunity to volunteer.  Your name will be written on the board.  Each additional check is worth one point, as well as your name.  These points are applied to your class work grade.

     Articles:  If you find an article in the newspaper or in a magazine (no internet!) you may write a summary of the article and turn it in for extra credit.  Points will depend upon effort!  I have examples available for you to see for ideas.

     Vocabulary Cards:  You may complete a set of flashcards on index cards for every set of vocabulary.  You will receive 20 points per set.  This means you can earn 180 points extra per grading period!  These extra credit points are applied to homework.  The German word needs to be on one side and the English word on the other side.  These points are applied to your homework grade.

Grading Equation

Homework = 10%

Warm-Up = 10%

Classwork = 20%

Quizzes = 15%

Tests = 25%
