CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
Beginning Class
- Upon entering the classroom, go to your desk and get out everything you need for this class only.
- Put your book bag in the designated area. Then, you will have no need to return to your book bag for anything until I dismiss the class or you ask (in Spanish) to pack up at the end of the class period.
- When you are seated, begin working on the warm-up assignment found on the board.
- BE READY WHEN THE BELL RINGS! So, get ready while you are socializing!
- Place any admits or make-up work in the designated area on my desk.
Arriving Tardy
- If you arrive tardy, as quietly as possible, get your things for class, place your book bag in the appropriate spot and get started on the assignment the class is on.
Assignment Headings
- Each assignment should have the following heading in the upper right-hand corner of the paper: Nombre (Name)
Fecha (Date)
Pàgina, tìtulo (Page #, assignment title)
(From time to time, I will assign a grade just for having the correct paper heading. This should be an easy A if you make it a habit!)
*Please write legibly!
Returning After an Absence
- When you have been absent, place your admit slip in the basket on the corner of my desk. DO NOT put it on my desk! If you arrive without one, you will be counted tardy and will be sent to the Attendance Office to get one.
- If your absence is excused, look in the appropriate class folder to see what assignments need to be made up, write down the information, and take any missed handouts. You have one day for each day you were absent to make up assignments when there is an excused absence.
- No credit is available for missed work due to an unexcused absence.
- It is your responsibility to schedule a time with me to make up any missed tests or quizzes. Make sure you check with me so that I can be sure to be here!
Textbooks
- You will be issued a textbook that is to be taken home for the remainder of the semester. These books are new and very costly. This will help cut down on your book bag load as well as keep the books in good condition!
- A textbook will be provided for you for use during class. If you fail to leave this book in the classroom, you will have to stay after 1 minute the next class period.
Homework
- Any homework should be turned in to the appropriate spot at the beginning of class. I will collect all homework shortly after the tardy bell rings.
- After I collect homework, nothing else will be accepted. NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED!
Tests and Quizzes
- During a test or quiz, I ask that there be no talking until the duration of the test or quiz.
- If you have a question during a test or quiz, please remain seated, raise your hand, and I will come to you.
- After you have completed your test or quiz, please find something to do quietly. Again, please do not talk until everyone has finished.
Coming to Attention
- There will be occasions when you will have opportunities to work in collaborative groups. Be ready to come to attention when called. Listen for phrases such as: ¡Pagen Atenciòn! (Pay Attention!) or ¡Escuchen, por favor! (Listen, please!).
- Please raise your hand if you would like to ask a question or make a comment unless you are responding to a question that I asked of the class.
During Class
- You are allowed to get up any time during class to throw something away, sharpen your pencil, or use anything on the front table except during instruction/review time. Your name will go on the board automatically if you do not follow this guideline. It is an unnecessary distraction.
- Participation in a language class is imperative. Grades will be given daily based on participation in oral activities, songs, group activities, etc.
Leaving class
- You are allowed to go to the restroom whenever needed except during instruction/review time, during a test or quiz, or during a group activity. You must have an agenda, and it must be filled out with the correct abbreviation for the place and time you wish to go. You must also ask the question in the target language. If the agenda is not filled out, or you do not have an agenda, or you forgot how to ask in Spanish, DON’T ASK!! Permission to see the nurse will be given if there is an emergency.
Eating or Drinking in Class
- Neither food nor drinks are permitted in class except bottled water. This is a school rule. Gum is prohibited as well, especially in a language class where speaking activities are frequently used.
Extra Credit
- Typically, there are no opportunities for extra credit. This makes it imperative that you turn in daily assignments and homework assignments.
Class Dismissal
- No one should begin packing up or retrieving book bags until permission is given.
- Please wait for me to say: “Hacen sus cosas” or “Pueden hacer sus cosas”.
Pack your things. You may pack your things.
*To ask for permission to pack up when we are done with class:
¿Puedo hacer mis cosas? or ¿Podemos hacer las cosas ?
May I pack my things? May we pack our things?
Substitute Present
- All rules apply when there is a substitute present! All classroom procedures should be followed as usual.
- Unless told otherwise, all work should be turned in to the substitute before leaving class. Gracias!!
