German/Deutsch I
Course Objectives

During this course you are going to use the textbook titled “Deutsch Aktuell 1”. During level 1 you will complete chapters 1-7. By the end of level 1 you will be able to do the following (in both the formal and informal tenses):

  • Greet and say farewell to people, including knowing appropriate greetings for different regions of German speaking countries;
  • Tell your name, ask someone their name, and tell what someone’s name is;
  • State your age, ask someone their age, and state what someone’s age is;
  • Identify male and female German names;
  • Demonstrate your understanding of numbers by telling ages, addresses, phone numbers, etc.;
  • Ask someone how they are doing and express how you are doing;
  • Tell where you live, ask someone where they live, and tell where someone else lives;
  • Describe people using limited adjectives and details about their lives;
  • State what time it is and ask what time it is, using different time-telling expressions;
  • Explain who different members of your family are;
  • Discuss what you are doing, ask others what they are doing, and tell what someone else is doing;
  • List your interests and ask about others’ interests;
  • Talk about sports you play, ask people about the sports they play, express sports others play;
  • Express likes and dislikes and give opinions on different matters;
  • Talk about school, including which classes you take, what teachers you have, when classes begin, etc.;
  • Identify objects in the classroom and around the school;
  • Describe your daily routines;
  • Agree and disagree with other peoples’ opinions;
  • Discuss the weather, ask how the weather is, express how the weather is during various seasons of the year;
  • Identify neighboring countries of Germany, as well as other European countries, and express what language is spoken there;
  • Inquire as to where someone is from;
  • Choose from a menu and order at a café or restaurant;
  • Identify foods eaten during different meals, as well as foods specific to Germany and German speaking countries;
  • Ask about prices and express that something is too cheap or too expensive;
  • Identify, describe (including the use of colors and descriptive adjectives) and choose various clothing items; and
  • Talk about how a department store is set up in Germany.

In addition, you will learn the following major grammar concepts:

  1. Conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense.
  2. Word order for statements and questions.
  3. Use of definite and indefinite articles.
  4. Parts of speech including subject, verb, and direct object and the effect they have on definite and indefinite articles.
  5. Use of Modal Verbs (helping verbs) in sentences.
  6. Use of separable prefix verbs.
