COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Early Childhood Education and Services prepares students for employment in early childhood education and services. The course also provides a foundation for advanced study leading to postsecondary education and careers in related fields. The course addresses child care and development issues that include guiding the physical, intellectual, social, and psychological development of children. The course of study includes planning and guiding developmentally appropriate practices for working with young children, including learning activities, guidance and discipline practices, the application of basic health and safety practices, and observation of the legal requirements of early childhood education and services. A project-based approach that utilizes higher order thinking, communication, leadership, and management processes is required.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

Emphasis is placed on applying concepts and principles and using communication skiI1s to listen, speak, write, and read. Since learning styles vary among students, a variety of instructional strategies will be included. At least 25% of instructional time will be lab experiences. Written and/or practical exams will be given.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Notebook for handouts and worksheets

Paper and pen or pencil for assignments

Tabs or notebook dividers

TARDIES, ATTENDANCE, AND MAKEUP WORK:

Students will be expected to be in the room with materials ready when the tardy bell rings. The school tardy policy will be followed. Attendance is very important in this class due to labs and group work. If a day is missed, the work must be made up within five days of returning. After the absence, the student should give the absentee permit to the teacher at the beginning of the period. Makeup work should be asked for and completed. Failure to make up work within five days will result in zeros and thus lower the final grade. Do your very best to be present.

STANDARDS OF COMPLETION:

Successful completion of this program requires that students satisfactorily complete the course work. Some of the methods of evaluation will be class assignments, class participation, homework, projects, home projects, tests, group and lab experiences. Grades will be determined as follows:

40% Labs and Projects
30% Tests and Quizzes
20% Daily Work
10% Homework
