Course Description:
This year you will study American literature. Your textbook is an anthology, a collection of diverse literary works. All the selections are by Americans and are in chronological order. This course studies the progression of American literature and celebrates the diversity that is America. Students will analyze the changes in attitudes, ideas, and styles that have occurred in American culture throughout the past several centuries. This course is also designed to prepare students for the language arts and writing portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.

Evaluation:
Methods of evaluation will vary but will include projects, reports, compositions, research paper, notebooks, home work, class work, group work, quizzes, tests, and class preparation.
LHS operates on a nine-week grading system with students earning credits on a semester (eighteen weeks) basis. There will be four grading periods, two per semester. Deficiency reports will be issued at each three week point. Mid-quarter reports will be issued to all students at the 4.5 week point. Mid-quarter reports and report cards will be sent home according to the schedule on the school calendar. All eleventh grade students will be given the EOCT. This will serve as the final exam and will account for 15% of the final numeric grade.

Quarter Grades:
Semester Grades: First nine weeks = 42.5%; Second nine weeks = 42.5%; Final Exam (EOCT) = 15%
Grading Scale: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C = 75-79; D = 70-74; F = 69 and below.
Necessary Materials:
2” three ring binder with two dividers (three sections), loose-leaf notebook paper that must be divided into four parts, #2 pencils (standard or mechanical), blue or black pens, 3x5 index cards. Have these with you every day!
Student Responsibilities:
Each student is responsible for his or her own learning. Students are required to bring to class every day a neatly organized English notebook with a table of contents and sections. Notebooks must be divided into four parts: class information, composition, literature, and grammar. Following an excused absence, students must bring an admit from the attendance office and make arrangements to make up all work according to the guidelines in the LHS student handbook. Completing makeup work is essential to continued success!
Absences:
When absent, each student is responsible for getting make-up work at an appropriate time upon return to class. Each student will complete the work within the guidelines outlined in the student handbook.
