Course : Foundations of Public Safety and Criminal Justice (Level 1)

Course Objectives : This survey course is designed to introduce student to a variety of agencies and professions in law enforcement, private security, correction, fire, and emergency management services. The course begins with an examination of the role and structure of the government and the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society. Students will then examine the components of the criminal justice system, including the roles and responsibilities of the police, courts, and corrections. Students will also explore the differences between the adult and juvenile justice systems and between the civil and criminal law. The course will also survey the roles and responsibilities of personnel in the private security and protective services, the fire service, and the emergency management service and discuss their contributions to public safety. Throughout the course the student will be exposed to key terms associated with public safety and criminal law.

Course requirements and assignments : Students knowledge will be tested on a frequent basis with written exams. Students will also be required to keep a notebook. Contained in the notebook will be key terms and questions that the instructor deems relevant. Students will also be required to complete group assignments and conduct an informal presentation of the material to the class. A final project will also be assigned to each student. Students will “draw” for their topic and be required to make a formal presentation to the class using a minimum of two visual aids in their presentation.

Grading Policy : Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of 0. The grades for this class will be calculated as follows:

Notebooks will be check weekly. If all instructor assigned terms and questions are accurately answered a grade of 100 will be issued.
