COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for students in the Career Prep Diploma tract. It is the introductory course for Applied Algebra and will prepare students for the successful completion on the state mandated Algebra One credit. Students will study basic mathematical concepts as well as introductory Algebra concepts. Real world mathematical applications will be a major part of the course as well as the use of a scientific calculator. The units of study will include: · Basic Numerical Concepts, · Variables and Expressions, · Integers and Rational Numbers, · Ratio, Proportion, and Percent, · Powers and Roots, · Solving Equations, · Data Management and Statistics, and · Basic Geometry and Measurement.
TEXT:CORD Bridges to Algebra and Geometry, Globe Fearon (2000). If the textbook is lost or destroyed beyond normal use, the student will be responsible for replacing the textbook. The cost for replacement will be the price of a new book. Each student will not be issued a textbook to take home. Students are assigned a desk and a specific text has also been assigned to that desk. Each student will be sharing a text with another student in another class; therefore, each student should make sure that they have the correct textbook and that nothing has been done to it.
MATERIALS NEEDED :
Paper, pencil, calculator, and folder.
CLASSROOM RULES :
Come to class prepared, on time and ready to learn (book, paper, pencil and other materials).
Be respectful (one person speaks at a time, no put downs, etc.).
Follow all school rules (as listed in your handbook/agenda).
Disruptive behavior will result in student verbal warning, parent phone call, detention or referral.
GRADING PROCEDURE :
Each quarter (9 weeks) grade will be calculated as 50% tests , 25% quizzes and 25% classwork and homework. There will also be a final exam each quarter that will cover the material from that grading period. The final semester grade will be calculated using the average of the two quarter grades.
GRADING SCALE :
A = 90 - 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 75 – 79 D = 70 – 74 F = 0 – 69
TUTORING:
I am available for before-school tutoring. Tutoring will be in room 401 in the mornings at 7:30. If you are having difficulties in class, please make plans to attend tutoring.
ASSIGNMENTS:
MAKE-UP WORK :
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain work missed due to an absence. Remember, you only have the number of days absent plus one to make-up any missed work, including tests and quizzes. Please be aware that you may receive a different version of the test/quiz than the remainder of the class if you are absent on a test/quiz date. You must have an excused absence to make-up any missed work.
FOLDERS:
It is required that all students keep a folder. It will be divided into four sections. This will be discussed when we start taking notes. Your folder will be collected and graded periodically.
FOOD/DRINK:
Food, drinks, and gum are NOT ALLOWED in the classroom. Leave all food, drinks, and gum in the cafeteria.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
Cell phones, CD players, and other such electronic devices are not to be out in the classroom. Keep your CD players in your lockers and your cell phones off and out of sight. Anyone caught using an electronic device will have the device confiscated.
