Prerequisite: None
Integrates writing, grammar, usage, speaking, and listening skills. Covers the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading and publishing, the study of form in personal narrative, descriptive and expository papers. Includes multicultural literature: short stories, novels, poetry, mythology, drama, nonfiction. Emphasizes oral/written response to literature, distinguishing characteristics of various genres and vocabulary study. Required research project.
English I Honors
Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor
Covers the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing; the study of form in personal narrative, descriptive, and expository papers. Includes a variety of multicultural literature: short stories, novels, poetry, mythology, drama, nonfiction. Emphasizes oral/written response to literature, distinguishing characteristics of various genres and vocabulary study. As the purpose of the class is to broaden and deepen knowledge and performance, additional in-depth work is required. A research project and a summer reading project are required. Emphasizes personal narrative, descriptive, and expository papers. Includes grammar and usage. Covers a variety of authors and selections from world literature, short stories, novels, drama, poetry, and classical mythology. Stresses vocabulary development and requires written literary analysis. Develops thinking, organizing, and speaking skills. A research project is required.
English II Honors

Offers opportunities to improve reading, writing, speaking/listening, and critical thinking skills for personal development and through the study of American literature, grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, and usage. A variety of literary genres and multicultural writers. Emphasizes expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing, research skills and literary analysis--research project required. Promotes organizational, communication, leadership, and teamwork skills. Prepares juniors for the writing and language arts sections of the Georgia High School Graduation tests and a state required end-of-course test.
English III Honors

Journalism I
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation, Permission of Instructor
Presents an overview of career opportunities and practice of skills in the communication field. Covers concepts and projects in print media, advertising, public relations, marketing, promotion, sales, editing, publishing, and photography. Includes production of the school newspaper and yearbook which require interviewing and reporting, writing and editing, layout and design, desktop publishing, and sales and promotion.
Journalism II
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation, Permission of Instructor
Enhances level one skills and experience. Offers opportunities in leadership as editors and continued career exploration. Teaches responsibility and dependability through deadlines and motivational skills through working with Journalism I students.
Drama Arts & Fundamentals
Prerequisite: Audition, Permission of Instructor
Develops and applies performance skills through basic vocal, physical, and emotional exercies. Includes improvisation, scene study, and related technical art forms. Allows students to perform short skits and plays on stage.
Mythology
Prerequisite: None
Mythology is an elective course presenting an overview of traditional narratives from ancient and modern cultures. Students will study and analyze these narratives for insights into the cultures from which they were formed. The course is designed to help students improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking skills. |
