Introduction to Healthcare
Science Technology

Prerequisite: None
Introduces students to the medical field. The following subjects will be covered: Safety Applications in Healthcare, Healthcare Delivery Systems, Teamwork and Leadership, Introduction to Healthcare Communications, Cultural Diversity, Introduction to Life Changes, Ethical and Legal Responsibilities, Health Maintenance Practices, Concepts of Microbiology, Medical Terminology, and Adult CPR. Other medical subjects will be covered, time permitting.
Applications of Therapeutic Services
(aka Health OC II)
Prerequisite: Introduction to
Healthcare Science Technology
Exploration of the responsibilities of the healthcare worker. The following subjects will be covered: Career Planning and Development, Leadership and Communication, Safety Practices and Infection Control, Information Technology Applications, Treatment Plans, Monitoring and Evaluating Patient Status, Anatomy/Physiology/Pathophysiology, Community First Aid, Basic Life Support for Infants and Children.
First Responder
Prerequisite: Intro and Applications
A medical based class that introduces students to the concept of emergency medical services. The following subjects will be covered: Introduction to EMS, Well-being of the First Responder, Legal Issues, Anatomy and Physiology, Lifting and Moving Patients, Airway Management, Patient, Assessment, Focused Medical History, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Bone and Joint Emergencies, Medical and Behavioral Emergencies, Bleeding Emergencies, obstetrics and gynecology, infants and children, EMS Operations.
Introduction to Medical Laboratory
Prerequisite: Intro and Applications
Students wishing to pursue a career in the Medical Laboratory Technology field will be exposed to fundamental principles, practices, and essential skills used in a professional medical laboratory. The following subjects will be covered: Career Planning, Professional Ethics and Regulatory Agencies, Laboratory Safety, Laboratory Equipment, Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Specimen Collection, Transporting and Processing Specimens, Quality Assurance, Laboratory Testing.
Healthcare Internship
(aka Health Occupations III: Internship)
Prerequisite: Completion of three other Healthcare Science Courses and a selection process by the instructor after the student completes all of the required forms Students observe healthcare workers in the workplace. The purpose of the course is to expose students to various healthcare facilities to help them make career decisions.
